This is a project we completed today! We spent a lot of time removing weeds, Bermuda grass, & debris from the soil so we could plant a lot of plants that will love on the soil & pollinators. It got me thinking - wow, our work today feels sacred. Here’s where I’m coming from…

Over the past 100 or so years, industrial/colonial land management, agriculture, & development have wreaked havoc on our planet’s soil (among other things…). Because almost half the land that can support plant life on Earth has been converted to croplands, pastures, rangelands, & development in urban areas, soils have actually lost 50 to 70 percent of the carbon they once held. Practices like mono-cropping (or lack of biodiversity where plants are grown), grass lawns, tilling, pesticide use, deforestation, etc. have all contributed to this.

The thing is… if we restore the capacity of soil to store carbon, healthy soil & plants can help pull carbon OUT of the atmosphere where there’s an imbalance (thanks mostly to corporate emissions, but that’s a soapbox for another post…). The healthier the soil, the less carbon there is lingering around in the atmosphere causing all kinds of problems.

Soil is an under recognized super power in our fight against climate change. “Small” acts like adopting regenerative practices that restore the power of soil in our yards and public areas can fundamentally reshape our relationship with our ecosystems… &, potentially, the future of our life on planet earth.

The four principles of soil health are: provide continuous living roots, minimize disturbance, maximize soil cover, and maximize biodiversity. See below for more info.

Plant more gardens EVERYWHERE! The vibrancy of our future on this planet can only be manifested (by acts of resistance & solidarity!) if we include plants, pollinators, soil, and beneficial microbes as part of our communities. Eco-systemic liberation or bust. May our relationship with land be renewed by the awakening of the soil. The soil is alive & so are we!

Here are some photos of the courtyard garden during installation and planting. Installation at this phase including cutting back all the cover crop we’d planted earlier in the year, carving out pathways (a very involved and tedious process!), shaping and prepping the beds for planting, laying out and planting all of the plants per the design, and setting the stone paths inside the garden beds. This phase was all about precision and flow: zooming in to tend to the tiniest of details while also keeping the big picture in focus and making sure that every element balanced the patterns and movement the space and the experience of the space was designed to evoke - a peaceful, luscious, whimsical courtyard garden.

In the middle of a long day, we were serenaded by one of the client’s children who played violin for us! Enjoy these photos (and musical video) of our crew working hard and these plants doing their best in the hot June sun!

Remember that video we just posted about the court

Remember that video we just posted about the courtyard garden we completed this summer? Here are a few before photos! These photos show the site fully covered by clover, buckwheat, and vetch that we planted to feed pollinators and help regenerate the soil after the terraces were sculpted and the pond and water catchment system were installed. The pink flags in some of the photos were used to mark the pathways and the garden beds in the design to aid the installation phase. Next up we’ll post photos of the site during construction to show more of the process from the phase showed here and the completed vision.
